The Team

We have always felt that the whole team needs to be familiar with all aspects the framing process. At the point of taking work on, knowledge of construction and materials, and of the possible treatments of each genre of artwork, are necessary to give helpful advice. We all have experience both in the shop and the workshop, which joins together the processes and provides the client with an integrated, efficient service.

STEPHEN KING
Heading the team in our workshop is Stephen King. Formerly trained in the classic cabinet making craft, Stephen served a four-year apprenticeship in a large high class joinery company. There he learned high end skills such as veneering, laminating and spraying.

Before moving into the world of framing, Stephen expanded his abilities by building everything from super yachts to skate boards ramps, with the occasional kitchen thrown in for good measure! All these skills when applied to the seemingly simple art of framing mean that, in terms of construction, and particularly with large scale frames, box frames or anything demanding specialist treatment, we have a real leading edge. If you want beautifully made frames with the potential to become future heirlooms, we have the imagination and skills to make them for you.

PETA KING
Peta’s first experience of picture framing came working for a successful city framers in Bath. Immediately after this, in 1993, she and Stephen set up Firle Framing at Middle Farm in Firle, East Sussex. After the two were married in 1995 they moved the business to the nearby town of Lewes, taking up residence in an old and characterful building in Mount Pleasant and renaming themselves Kings Framers. In 1999, with the business going from strength to strength, they again moved, now on to the High Street. Under Peta’s expert guidance, the shop has established itself as the go-to place in the South East for framing, and Kings Framers has flourished in new directions, branching out into both consultancy and product design.

ALEX SAUNDERS
Alex studied on the same course as Josh Stenning, where the two met, and, like Josh, also joined Kings Framers at an important stage in its expansion, in 2003. Alex is our workshop manager and takes responsibility for the quality of frames as they leave the workshop. His interests include collecting urban art and skiing.

TAYLOR WILKINS
Taylor spent his first two years learning all aspects of our techniques in our workshop and gaining a thorough grounding in finishing and frame construction. He then shadowed Peta and Josh and is now our highly competent (and very charming) shop manager.

WILLIAM JAMES
The latest member of our team to join (February 2010), William’s background is in commercial framing on a large scale. His skills and enthusiasm are real assets to the workshop team.
