Here are just a few images for a taste of Marrakech.

Happy Valentines Day

2014 may have started with miserable weather and whipping winds, but we at Kings Framers have been feeling very optimistic and full of new ideas. Trade shows have proved to be full of lots of new and exciting design and we hope to bring you updates of this as beautiful new things arrive.

That magical feeling...

Cold crisp wintery days, thinking about surprising our friends and family with beautiful, carefully chosen presents, decorating our home, planning the food and the table. It's these simple, thoughtful preparations that give me that magical feeling.

Battening Down the Hatches

Despite the sudden drop in the temperature, we've had a wonderful week! With all the inspiring cook books arriving in the shop, we took the opportunity to familiarise ourselves with some of them and try out some of the gorgeous recipes.

Autumn

We're well into the new season now and getting really quite excited about all the new products coming in. The shop seems to be brimming with new products, we're particulaly pleased with these storage boxes, there are so many that we have had to build a cityscape out of them in our shop window!

20th Birthday

Time really flies when you're having fun!
I can't believe that on the 1st July it is 20 years since we opened for business back in the summer of 1993.

This is where it all began, our first workshop at Middle Farm, Firle.

Sophie-Rose's Blog

I started working at Kings Framers back in September and I am now writing my first blog. We are often getting deliveries of new products in the shop which is always exciting, and I find myself wanting an awful lot of it which can never be a bad thing.

Surviving February

Throughout the month boxes of lovely new products have been steadily arriving, a welcome distraction from this dustbinlid weather to be opening boxes of new products to sell in our Lewes shop.
We are having a great reception to this brilliantly designed range of speakers from Aarevalo, leading up to Christmas and now they have introduced four hot new colours, we particularly love the orange; We f

Late Night Shopping, Christmas Build Up Blog

Thursday night after the shop was shut we put in our Christmas window display! I always look forward to it but it takes a lot of planning and so when it works out well I am so relieved. The morning after it was such a beautiful cold crisp day, it really feels like the season has begun!

Mark Hearld & His Workbook

Lewes Bonfire was a great night as ever, if markedly subdued by the rookie ban that had been imposed this year, and there were far fewer visitors, perhaps as the 5th fell on a Monday night. Here though are some amazing images of how our town is transformed for this one night of the year!

Bonfire Night

November the Fifth is a great day to be in Lewes. The town's centuries old tradition of parades and fireworks is unlike anywhere else. Unless you have been here for Bonfire it is very difficult to picture the extrodinary experience that makes us so proud to live in Lewes. This was taken outside our shop last year.

Staying Inspired

Our Newest window display, to rid ourselves and our customers of the gloom of these darkening days, is this joyous collection of prints from Woop Studios showing collective nouns of beautiful birds, the lovely handmade felt cushions from Nuggett, a selection of great new games and books showing the works of Charley Harper and some of our leather satchels in gorgeous colours.

Autumn Inspiration

So the wonderful reproduction maps arrived and we immediately did a window display which is going down very well with lots of the maps gone already and a list of new ones to order.

The Birds and The Bees and Beautiful Maps

On Monday Sophie-Rose and I spent a great day in London for the Top Drawer show. I always love to see what's new and see our lovely suppliers with their latest products. We were most excited to have discovered a family firm recreating the beautiful folding maps that are a usually a wonderful find in an antique shop. These are produced using all the traditional techniques and craft even the original glue recipe!

Carpe Diem

It seemed appropriately inspiring and timely to use this brilliant reminder in our window display, over the Olympics. Our sunny beachy window display which had kept us all cheerful through the rain and the finally looked just right when we had our fantastic heat wave, has made way for a whole different look. This gorgeous collection of clocks finally arrived with us and we wanted to really show them off.

Gorgeous Things To Make Us Forget The Gloom

Jessica Zoob + Bade Stageberg Cox Chairs Project

Steve and I were up in London at NeoBankide last week on the Nineteenth floor for the opening of Jessica Zoob's beautiful exhibition. Her work looked amazing in the space and the views across London were extraordinary, we were so lucky it was such a beautiful evening and had perfect vantage point to see the Shard's laser show.

NEW MARK HEARLD PRINTS + LONDON'S 'AFFORDABLE ART FAIR'

ColoursI started writing this blog on the 15th March, I appear to have taken several steps back in my ability to control technology. I can't even tell you how many times i have re-started, and my original draft was about completely different things, except that on that morning I had received an email to tell me that Mark Hearld's new lithograph was available and that we were also able to show this lovely image Hatbox Squirrels.

NEW WINDOWS, NEW ARTISTS, NEW MOULDING SAMPLES!

ColoursBeautiful things arrived first thing on Monday morning this week and threw us into chaos trying to find room to display them all.  We took out the window display with wonderful stripyness and it is now full of very pretty textiles and storage boxes, good for stowing away precious ephemera as you get down to some serious spring cleaning! The shop now smells deliciously of candles!

Stripes, Triangles and Joe Rodgers collages

Butterfly It has felt positively springlike this week, Thursday was such a beautiful day, i was getting my hands dirty in my garden and clearing the way for the bulbs that are braking through the earth. Well timed, arriving in the shop this week is a charming collection of gardeners tools and tin mugs from Thoughtful Gardener, the fork and trowel are particularly well made and perfect for purpose.

TRIANGLES, BOTANICAL PRINTS, JAPANESE DEISGN + HOMES AND GARDENS

ButterflyIts funny how when you can see something that makes an impression and the the same motif pops up everywhere. Well I posted the very beautiful painting Toil of our Hands by Biggs and Collings as shown by the Vigo rally at the London Art Fair, and now I keep seeing triangles before my eyes.

LEONARDO DAVINCI + CHRISTMAS CALLIGRAPHY BY SEB LESTER

Leonardo DavinciI felt very priviledged to go to see the Leonardo Exhibition at the National Gallery last week. It was an epic collection of his work and a once in a lifetime opportunity to see these incredible  masterpieces, and yet they had been curated in such a way as to achieve a sense of intimacy and closeness. The quality of glass and the way they were arranged that allowed us to get very near to the work was wonderful.

New Ravilious Prints - plus A Visit from John Simpson

Eric RaviliousLewes had its Late night shopping event last night and it poured with rain all day and all evening! Such a massive shame for all those who had put so much into the planning and helped do their bit for the town for what is usually a very special, magical evening. Taylor and I had started our day trekking up and down the many steps to the top of the Castle ferrying equipment for the fireworks display with a team of very wet volunteers!

John Simpson - Snow Patrol Album Cover "Fallen Empires"

The New Season

We started with a very successful trip to Top Drawer, and already lovely shiny new things are arriving in the shop. Come and see!

Blek le Rat, Mellis and Fedden

Autumn starts here then with a howling gale and inside-out umbrellas decorating our high street! Just last week we were on a road trip visiting friends and family in Devon and Cornwall. Such a beautiful part of the world, wide open skies and beautiful seas.

Lewes - Fine All Year Round!

If we are a nation of shopkeepers, the unbelievably shocking events of this week, puts those individuals into even sharper focus. I sent my love and thoughts to those whose businesses have been so mindlessly and shamefully ruined, I feel even more determined that the role of the independent trader is key in society, displaying our strengths alongside our wares.

John Simpson + monoprints by Gary Goodman

Happy Birthday to Taylor for yesterday!

Steve has been really enjoying a very different type of work this last couple of  weeks, with the building of all the internal walls and spray booth in our new workshop, and since school has broken up now, both our children Sophie Rose and Jerome have been put to work with the painting too! We are so looking forward to the efficiency our new space will bring.

SALE

The High street is full of sale signs and it is a funny experience for a shopkeeper,  but you have to see the positive side in it being a time for a bit of a shake up and reducing pieces that have been lovingly made by our own fair hand means that they may sell to someone who will cherish their bargain even more! It does mean we have a vibrant busy shop and thats got to be a very good thing!

FRINK, YOUNG, RALPH AND SMART

Monica MacDonald, Restoration and new Brighton Graduate

Peter BlakeWe have been chatting to lots of artists this week in the shop who are getting back to normal after this years open houses, which finished last weekend, and its interesting to learn what has been selling. As we have observed for years, it is the quality of  the print that  buyers of art really look at with much more scrutiny, when as now, people want value for their money.

Grrrr!

This week was full of people bringing positivity and inspiration. Our Monday morning meeting with Lucy Sheridan set the tone for the week, she brought with her some fabulous new works, including the fantastic tiger called 'Grrrr'. She has produced this gorgeous orange and black edition of seven, exclusively for us and we also have a pink and orange version available both at £300.

Fresh feeling of change in the air!

We launched into the week by changing our window display, we have built a reputation over the years for our displays, and I love hearing that someone’s day has been brightened by them, and it puts us under pressure to maintain our high standards. I always try to show new artwork or products to contrast with the display before, it throws the shop into chaos and I love the energy change always brings.

Tags

Simpson, Simonsen and Hitchens

Taylor was away for a day this week,  so Steve and I worked together in the shop, a rare occurrence these days and something that took us back to the beginnings of Kings Framers. Like a fish out of water, Steve being in the shop resulted in some hilarious consequences, his tendency to say whatever comes into his head left a few customers bemused!

Welcome

Hello, my name is Peta King. This is my first Blog entry for Kings Framers as we launch our brand new website. We have been busily putting the final touches to the site, but last week did manage a flying visit to Cornwall to see two of our favourite artists, Roger Hilton at the Newlyn Art Gallery -- a celebration of 100 years since his birth -- and a lovely collection of works on paper by Sir Terry Frost at the Belgrave Gallery St Ives.
